National Dress Up Like Amy Winehouse Day

That would be known to the rest of the US as “Halloween”…

True story, since 2012 I’ve been dressing up as Amy Winehouse every year for Halloween. There’s no good reason other than the fact that I’ve never enjoyed dressing up for Halloween until I landed on her costume. In 2017 I briefly considered dressing up with a Barbie doll dressed as Miley Cyrus hanging from the wrecking ball that was my pregnant belly but I was far too lazy to make this outfit happen. Dressing up as Amy Winehouse proves to be easy once you have the wig. Skinny jeans, ballet slippers, wife beater, fake tats. Also, I did a gig on Halloween that year and rather enjoyed singing “You Know I’m No Good” dressed up as the author. National Amy Winehouse Day is swiftly swooping down upon us, my friends and I’m afraid I’ve lost my mojo on this one. I’m more concerned with dressing up my 20-month-old in the pumpkin costume I also wore as a child.

Tonight my husband asked- when musing on the idea of Trick-or-treat- what I would dress as…and I think you know the answer, folks. Suddenly, I was reminded of Amy’s special day in my world. Did you know, by the way- that she was actually born with the last name WINEHOUSE? Sometimes when tragedy and comedy run the same storyline its just too much for me to take. I’ll always be a fan of her voice and her music and apparently her caricature. I had a student perform “Rehab” in one of my last concerts. It was bittersweet. I loved that her music transcends generations but the awful irony of her lyrics in Rehab make it miserable for me to hear no matter how soulful the siren.

So do you think anyone will recognize my costume if I walk into the local library on a Saturday afternoon with my Pumpkin styled child? Hah. I hope so. Did D.A.R.E. ever make beaters? That might be my ultimate homage to the comedy/tragedy that is my fandom.
